Prerequisite

Though this course does not have any prerequisite course, it is targeted for 3rd year or later students. Since English will be used as the language of instruction, students are expected to have adequate English proficiency.

Objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide students with awareness and sensitivity toward social and economic issues. Students are expected to be able to positively respond to the existing societal problems within the context of their discipline. It is, therefore, most issues to be discussed are social issues, particularly dilemmas. Students are encouraged to analyze the issue and come up with possible contribution within the context of IT perspective. Other objectives include,

  • Discuss issues related to social, ethics, and profession aspects,
  • Provide general survey of cultural impacts of technology, particularly computer technology, and stimulate reflections upon the social and ethical issues,
  • Enable students to make informed value judgment in their profession,
  • Develop professional responsibilities.

Topics to be discussed

Topics are selected from recent social, economic, and political problems. Topics could be drawn from domestic issues as well as international ones, including

  • Understanding the history and origin of computing,
  • Understanding the social impacts of computer's technology,
  • Understanding computer scientists' responsibility,
  • Dealing with evolving new technology,
  • Understanding the intellectual property issues.

It should be realized that recent and up to date reading materials cannot be prepared too early before it is discussed in the class. However, the following materials could be used to enrich students' understanding:

  • J.A. Senn, Information technology in business, 1995.
  • M.A. Arbib, Computers and the cybernetic society, 1983.
  • L. Long, Computers and information system, 4th ed., 1994.
  • Current newspapers, magazines, and other newsletters.
